| As our name implies, our philosophy is that there’s no nobler fate for a model railroad kit than to be bashed, modified, customized, detailed or otherwise transformed. We bemoan the current trends toward ready-to-run products built by cheap labor in far-off lands, and of hiring professional layout builders to do all the construction so the owner can run trains. While we have nothing against running trains and we respect the pros as experts in their craft, we believe the special quality of model railroading as a hobby is the involvement of the hobbyist in creating a building, scene, or piece of rolling stock that is unique, memorable, or just plain fun.
At Kitbash Depot, our goal is to find the products and present them in ways that will bring out the modeler in all of us. You’ll find that our site is organized by categories, industries, and “themes”, so you can go to one section to find all the logging-related products, or to another to find everything you need for building a freight yard. We have a manufacturer listing, to be sure, but we figure it’s not your primary criterion in browsing for products.
Speaking of manufacturers, we take pride in finding and supporting the many “cottage industry” manufacturers in our hobby. One of our favorites is Keystone Locomotive Works, a family business in western New York state that manufactures high-quality logging-related kits and detail items from cast metal and wood. Another is On Trak Model Products, a one-man operation in Illinois that makes excellent cast-metal steam-era trucks and other vehicles. Comstock Car Shops, based in California, makes “old west” logging and mining figures and structure kits from wood and metal. Because of their limited production capacity, all items from these manufacturers are not always in stock, but they’re worth waiting for.
Kitbash Depot is, itself, one of those “cottage industries”. Our business is strictly internet. We don’t have a storefront, and we don’t keep normal business hours. We also don’t publish a phone number - not that we’re unsociable, but because we have day jobs, and do most of our work in the evening (Pacific Time, at that). If you’d like to talk, just send us an email (dan@kitbashdepot.com ) with your phone number and some times that are convenient for you, and we’ll call you.
Finally, we like suggestions and special requests. If there’s a product line that you think fits our business and you don’t see it listed, drop us a note. If there’s a special product you’ve been looking for and can’t find elsewhere, let us know and there’s a good chance we can order it for you, and often sell it at a discount.
Thanks for stopping by,
Kitbash Depot
